Day Services

Monthly letter from Day Services Coordinator-

OVERVIEW--

LCS’ Day Services Program provides opportunities for persons with disabilities to engage in a variety of learning experiences that are focused on helping each person maximize his/her potential and involvement in the community.

Consumers are supported by a caring team of staff. The staff to consumer ratio ranges from 1:6 -1:3 depending on the abilities and limitations of each consumer.

A case manager coordinates communication between families/guardians, residential staff, and other agencies. Through this communication, an individualized program plan is formed. This plan reflects the strengths, preferences, wants, and needs of the person served and is designed to maximize each consumers independence, learning potential, and integration into the community. Individual plans are reviewed every six months, or on an as-needed basis, to ensure that wants and needs of the individual are being met.

Activities are developed based on individual preferences, strengths, and the needs of the consumer. Consumers are encouraged to develop and maintain social, leisure, communication skills, self-care skills and safety skills. Classes may include the following topics:

  • Problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Communication
  • Creating and nurturing relationships
  • Stress relief
  •  Independent living
  • Safety
  • Culinary Arts
  • Horticulture
  • Art
  • Living a healthy lifestyle
  • Community Service

Day Services consumers are offered the opportunity to explore and serve the community on a daily basis. Community service, education, and recreation/ leisure are the focus of these outings. Some examples of community experiences/projects follow.

     Sensory Room

Another component of the Day Services Program is the Sensory Room.  This is a multi-sensory room that provides opportunities to enhance consumers' awareness of their environment through use of the five senses. This multi-sensory approach is also effective in helping consumers block out distractions, remain focused, and achieve calmness.
